On February 3rd and 4th, in Făgăraș, the first exchange of experience took place between the Local Initiative Groups and the Roma experts/leaders. Among the topics addressed were:
• Good practices to address the needs of Roma communities;
• Good practices for promoting Roma culture;
• Measures to desegregate and combat discrimination;
• Relationship between local institutions / authorities with Roma citizens;
• Representation and representativeness.
The meeting took place at the headquarters of the partners of the Făgăraș Roma Association, where the LIG members from Făgăraș presented both the actions carried out within the project and the measures from the Local Action Plan, approved by the local public authority. There were visits both to the Făgăraș City Hall and to the Cincu Secondary School, but also to two centers within the Social Assistance Directorate in Făgăraș and to a placement center, where 27 girls live.
So far, about 70% of the issues outlined in the Local Action Plan by the LIG have been resolved. The community has sewerage, drinking water, paved roads, renovated sidewalks and garbage bins. Problems that until the project was carried out were not put on the agenda of the local public authorities and weren’t resolved.
Also, during the visit to the community, the public administrator of Făgăraș City Hall presented us the programs they accessed regarding the vulnerable groups, but also the future plans regarding them. Thus, the priority in the next period is the construction of four apartment complexes for the people in the area of the plant, who are mainly Roma people, disadvantaged, and in a year from now, the foundations of the construction of three more apartment complexes are scheduled to begin. Since 1989, no decision has been taken to build such housing for vulnerable people.
