166 years since the abolition of Roma slavery - Brăila

The 20th of February marked the 166th anniversary of the abolition of Roma slavery, so the Local Initiative Groups from Brăila County organized several events to mark this part of our history. For the first time, eight such celebrations took place in the county.

During the last activity, the Local Initiative Groups from Lacu Dulce, in partnership with the “Anton Pann” Gymnasium School, watched the film “Roma Slavery - The Long Road to Freedom”, but also organized a debate, where they focused on themes: promotion the history of Roma in schools, the role of teachers in promoting the cultural elements of Roma in the classroom, but also the importance of collaboration between school, community and institutions.

The guests of the event were both directors of school from the municipality and from county, as well as representatives of local and county public administration or representatives of public institutions.

"Through this event we set out for the participants, regardless if they are teachers, students, parents or local leaders, to understand how important is to know the past… A nation who does not know and does not assume their history, for better or worse , is a nation without identity, without future…

Roma slavery was the greatest and longest tragedy of the Roma, we cannot neglect this, and we, the civil society, came to support the schools with a series of activities and courses on Roma history, interculturality, parental education to try to cover the gaps created by the lack of this information in the school curricula or in the formal pedagogical training of teachers. ” (Daniel Caraivan, community facilitator, Brăila county).
