This year, on February the 20th, we commemorated the 165th anniversary of the Roma's emancipation. The Community Development Agency Foundation "Împreună" and the HoltIS Association have contributed to the knowledge of thehistory of our Roma neighbours through didactic activities supported by teachers.
For five centuries, the Roma have been subjected to inhumane treatment, enduring physical abuse, starvation, rape and even murder, without anyone being held accountable. On February the 20th 1856the ruler of Wallachia Barbu Știrbei (1849-1856) abolished slavery through the "Law for the emancipation of all Gypsies in the Principality of Wallachia".
Romania has had the longest period of slavery of all time (almost 500 years). However, the painful past of the Roma is unfortunately not known by a large part of the population. For this reason, we promoted Roma history as our history, everyone's history, in order to build an inclusive society.
