We give in order to receive
Often when we have to talk about the Împreună Agency in different presentations, we try to emphasize what our Foundation does or has done since the first year of activity.
The "Împreună" Community Development Agency Foundation was created to complement the discourse that Roma NGOs had at that time, which was mainly oriented towards "human rights". This was more than appropriate, given the context of the 1990s, which was marked by many inter-ethnic conflicts in which members of the Roma minority were the main "actors".
However, the new perspective offered by Romania's intentions of joining the European Union offered other types of challenges for Roma communities - the need for socio-economic development, local development, the need to change mentalities, etc...
The community development method, which aims to make the most of the resources available to an individual/community, was considered by those who founded our Foundation as a way of working in Roma communities in Romania, not only because "it was fashionable" (it really wasn't!), but especially because this method requires permanent dialogue at the local level, a dialogue without which you cannot bring about significant changes. Our results over the last 20 years have shown us that where people work TOGETHER towards these goals, changes for the better are possible, irreversible and in turn generate other changes.
We strongly believe in a world where we live together without being afraid to let our children play with Roma... just because they are Roma; we work every day to stimulate reflection, both inside and outside the Roma community, leading to a harmonious development of the society in which we live; we consider that we, as Romanian Roma citizens, should have the same rights and obligations as everyone else; we are convinced that each of us must learn to give (information, resources, trust, etc.. ) in order to receive (development, welfare, solidarity).
For all of this and much more that cannot be expressed in words, we must learn to work, live, laugh, cry, live TOGETHER.
