On August 2nd, 1944 (just 78 years ago), in the concentration camp at Auschwitz II-Birkenau, the approximately 3000 Roma left alive were exterminated in gas chambers. In total, in Europe, about 500,000 Roma were killed during the Holocaust. Among them were women, the elderly and children – that is, part of our Roma ancestors.
Today, August 2nd, we commemorate the victims of the Roma Holocaust (Poraimos or Samudaripen in the Romani language). That is why this year, in the localities from Călărași County, namely, Curcani, Mănăstirea and Ulmeni, local events are organized to commemorate the Day dedicated to the victims of the Roma Holocaust.
